calling all dog owners...

We are thinking about getting a boston terrier by the end of April/ May. I just want to hear if people regret getting a dog or not. Grant loves animals and since we will be in the city for the next little while- a dog will have to be the compromise. We like the short haired, small dog for now. Let me know...

I haven't had a dog in a long time, but here are the major downsides that I see: figuring out what to do with them when you leave the house for long periods of time, poop/pee all over your house, and big bills if they get sick. It's still a battle for me, though, because Owen loves animals, too. But if you guys get one, we'll just have to come over and visit! :)

If you get a dog--don't get a puppy. They are hyper and will scare Grant. They are a lot of work. Don't do it!!!!! If you get a calm older dog that would be better but there is still the poop/pee, vets, finding them when they run off, finding someone to take care of them when you are out of town, barking, etc. My kids do love their dog, but none of them like feeding, cleaning poop, or walking him.

we've always had a dog and they are just part of the family (but last on the list) We never had a puppy though. Your brother's dog is cute. I say go for it but be ready to care for it - I like dogs because I feel safer when Paul is away or it I'm out walking early in the mornings.
Be sure not to get a hyper one!

Don't do it! HA! We got a boxer puppy last May after we had to put our dog to sleep the previous October. I love our Roxy, but she is a pain in the rear. Dogs are a lot of work. Anytime we want to go somewhere we have to make sure we are back before too long so we can take her out. When we leave for the weekend we have to arrange for someone to stay with her or come over to take her out and feed her.

I am sure we will always have a dog, but I will NEVER get a puppy again. Boxers are great dogs but have very long puppyhoods so we are looking at another 2 years of teaching her not to chew everything in sight, including Dax when he runs past her.

Dogs are great, but they are so much more work than you first realize. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

We adopted an older dog (a schnauzer) two years ago when we moved here. I am not a huge dog fan because I've seen them eat poopy diapers. So they always seem a little dirty to me. But our dog is pretty laid back. We usually have friends with dogs who are willing to trade dog sitting when we go out of town. We just help them when they need it the next time, so that hasn't been a big deal. We let her run around in the fenced backyard and go on walks sometimes.

i am taking all the good advice from you all - and waiting on the puppy purchase... Even though I think grant would love a puppy- I would probably go nuts after a day or 2. Plus financially, it is probably better to wait until my husband has a job!!! So in about 1 year we will rethink it...thanks again!

So I think one dog would be manageable, but we have 3 and it is like having 4 toddlers instead of one. Just make sure Grant and the dog get along, that way they can play. Princess comes in handy because she plays really well with Rossi. The rest are banned to the kitchen because they don't play so well :( One word: Kennel, dogs need to be kenneled when you are not home and can't leave them in the backyard, otherwise they will tear apart your house and use it for their own personal bathroom. We also kennel them at night. I also think a schedule really is good for dogs, then there are no accidents. Just look at it like another kid, you'll do fine.
